Hello everybody, I had my training at TMC School in Oct/November 2009, for 3 weeks. I really loved everything: food, people, montains, elephants, night market, weather, teachers, tuk-tuk, and the people of Blind Foundation. I got great massages there!!! and I cant wait to go back!!!

Wow. I just read everyone' s comments and I am bursting with excitement. So if I could spend 2 months in or around chiang Mai what would be the most information presented clearly and traditionally? Who or where should I study? Thanks all. :)

It was a real treat being back in Chiangmai for most of November and, thanks to the PPP who shut down the airports in Bangkok, some of December.

I went primarily to take the Abdominal Chi Massage course at Sunshine and strongly recommend it. There is a lot of material covered so it’s just the beginning of the learning process. The text though is a decent reference book and I’ve already used it on several patients.

I wanted to be in Chiangmai for Loy Krathong so we went up a week early and I took the basic Nerve-Touch Massage class at Mama Lek's school. On the website they say the course is for new and advanced parishioners. Using that criterion I have to say the class was a disappointment. Pikul Termyod is an excellent teacher and I highly recommend the class for somebody only has a week to learn Thai massage. Basically though she just taught another sequence that simply rearranged what already I knew.

The advanced Nerve-touch class seems more suited for experienced practitioners. I did learn a few things just watching Mama Lek’s son “Master Jack” give a massage after reading the advanced text.

To be fair, I am one of those who think a practitioner who is still doing the sequence they learned in school a month after the class is over has missed the point.

I spent the last week with Pichest. I have heard of him for years but always put off going to see him because I “only had a week”. A friend convinced me this trip that a week was better than nothing – and I learned more in that week than I have elsewhere since I first began to study Thai Massage a little over five years ago. This really should be required training for anybody who uses Thai massage in a therapeutic setting. I’ve already started thinking of routing a required trip to the US through Chiangmai in June and definitely plan to spend more time with him in November.

A footnote for those carnivores in our group who live in Asia, the owners of the Pun Pun Guesthouse have taught the local baker to make rye bread, found a source for corned beef and make the best Ruben east of Manhattan. It's not on the menu so just ask for it.

Namaste.

I'm thinking about taking the Abdominal Massage at Sunshine Massage School in November. Just wondered if anyone in the group has taken or knows anyone who has taken the course.

Hello Friends! I studied at Baan Hom Sumanprai, a healing herbal center just outside of Chiang Mai. This small center is run by Maw Hom, who is a Traditional Thai Medicine doctor. She was raised in a remote village and learned herbal remedies from her grandmother. She lives at the center with her husband and her extended family. She speaks English. She teaches classes and private lessons. I studied with her privately for 10 days and stayed in an antique teak rice house on her property. There are 3 incredible meals a day. Wai Kru and Ruesri Dat Ton begins each day at 7 a.m. sharp. Her healing herb garden is big and beautiful. Class is often interrupted by a neighbor or friend stopping by for herbal remedies or massage treatments for ailments. It was a rich and wonderful experience.

Hello All!

I spent close to five weeks in Chiang Mai and took seven classes at five different schools. The best for me was Pichest and Loi Kroh. I studied for two weeks at Pichest and it was great. But I soon realized to come away with a huge amount of knowledge from him you need to stay at least a month (he would say one year!). His dharma talks in the morning were funny and poignant. You never knew what you would learn with PIchest that day. He would demonstrate something and you think you should just copy what he did...but he would come around and tell you "that is not his problem, this is" and show you something completely different.

I took private lessons from Loi Kroh and also learned Reusi Dat Ton (50 poses). Dom was my teacher and she was excellent. This school caters very well to tourists and you can receive one on one training.

I will certainly visit them both next time.

I was in Chiang Mai in March and April of 2007, living in the upper northeast quadrant of the old city on Moon Muang Soi Gao. I spent a remarkable week studying with Pichest down in Hang Dong and did some study of herbal facial/body treatments at ITM/Spa Mantra. I also did a little bit of Thai language study and cooking classes at the Chiang Mai Thai Cookery School (aroy mahk!).

Can't wait to go back!
