a new group

It dawned on me that I am likely not the only one here that is just starting on my journey, so I created a group for new people as well as those who want to mentor.

Just saying hello to everyone. I have actually been reading and studying Thai Medicine for almost two years. Unfortunately I haven't had the opprotunity financially to begin studying with a teacher. I am hoping that I will be able to start classes s…

Books, websites and DVD's are resources, not teachers. I think I had almost 100 hours with a teacher before I read a book. And when I did, it had very little in common with what I was taught ... even though it was written by my teacher. You begin…

Hi Brian: Good luck with your journey. Thai bodywork can be challenging. I am new to Thai massage . I will say that doing 14 years of traditional massage, sports massage, etc, has really been hard on my body too. I have only had 30 hours of Thai tra…

nephyr, You bring up a very valid point. Massage in all its forms is inherently kinestetic, and like martial arts, is very difficult and even dangerous to learn without hands on guidence. I definately want significant hands on guidence before attem…

Hey Brian, for home study I highly recommend Pierce Salguero's books. Also, this book http://www.tmcschool.com/thai_massage_book.asp you can only get this one online from Thailand, so it's a bit spendy, but it has some of the most accurate theory an…

Profile Information

What is your primary interest in the Thai healing arts? (Please provide a detailed answer.)
I started out 16 years ago as a massage hobbiest working on friends & family. As I became better my practice expanded to parties, clubes, and events. Up until 2004 I was self trained learning mostly from trial & error, books, and martial arts (tai chi/ Qigong). in 2004 I discovered Reiki as well as Ipsalu Kriya Tantra Yoga, and began training in both, applying what I learned to massage. In 2008 I decided to make massage my main carrer and attended a local school where I became certified in Western massage, Licensed by the state Medical Board in Ohio, and am also now nationally certified by the NCBTMB.
What is your level of involvement? (Please provide a detailed answer.)
Professional, Student
What kind of Thai modalities do you have training in? (Please provide a detailed answer.)
I currently have no experience at all in thai massage aside from receiving it; however, I strongly desire to change that. I tend to use alot of yoga stretches learned from Tantra in my current massage practice, and make heavy use of myofascial release techniques. I feel that I will take to Thai massage easily and enjoy giving it very much.
Where/with whom have you studied? (Please provide a detailed answer.)
As mentioned above, I do not have any formal education in Thai Massage. My tantra and reiki studies were with Miss Jaiya and Jon Hanauer back when they still resided in Yellowsprings, Ohio. My formal massage education was received at the American Institute of Alternative Medicine in Columbus, Ohio
What are your other related or unrelated interests/hobbies? (Please provide a detailed answer.)
Tai Chi/Qi gong, Ipsalu Kriya Tantra Yoga, Reiki, Japanese Aesthetic Arts, Computers

Welcome Brian!. I have bought several books and dvds regarding Thai Massage and have taken a 30 hour class here in the US. Pierce has the most comprehensive books on Thai Healing. I feel certain I will continue my studies with one of the TAO Mountain affiliated schools. Reading everything that Pierce recommends is helpful and informative. I have spent several hours reading all his links and have just scratched the surface.
Happy Journey!!
